About Us

At the Root Arts is a community-focused creative arts organisation rooted in the belief that everyone deserves access to creativity, confidence, and self-expression.

We work with children, young people, and communities across West Lothian, and beyond, to deliver inclusive drama, music, and creative programmes that place imagination, wellbeing, and connection at their heart. From weekly drama clubs and holiday camps to youth-led projects, workshops, and community events, our work is designed to be playful, empowering, and accessible to all.

At the Root Arts was founded on the idea that creativity grows best when people feel safe, supported, and heard. We create welcoming spaces where participants can take risks, build confidence, develop skills, and discover their voice — whether that’s stepping on stage for the first time, collaborating with others, or simply having fun being creative.

Our programmes prioritise:

Inclusion and accessibility, ensuring children and young people from all backgrounds can take part

Creative confidence, helping participants believe in their ideas and abilities

Community connection, strengthening relationships between people, places, and stories

Youth voice and leadership, giving young people ownership over their creative journeys

We work closely with local venues, schools, community centres, and partner organisations to ensure our projects respond to local needs and create lasting impact.

At the Root Arts is about more than performance — it’s about growth. We nurture creativity from the ground up, supporting individuals and communities to flourish, connect, and tell their stories.

At the Root Arts began life as a small but passionate youth project called Regal Youth Company, which ran for five years at Regal Community Theatre. What started as a local drama group quickly grew into something much bigger — a creative home for young people to build confidence, make friends, and find their voice through performance.

As the project evolved, it became At the Root Theatre, and in 2024 Martine Browne, Becca Lamont and Matthew Swan came together to officially form At the Root Arts CIC. United by a shared belief in the power of creativity, they created At the Root Arts to open up opportunities in drama, music, dance, and the wider creative arts — with a simple but powerful aim: to help build communities, strengthen people, and spread positivity and joy.

Today, At the Root Arts continues to grow, rooted in community and driven by connection, creating inclusive spaces where children, young people, and families can explore creativity, express themselves, and thrive.
